Looking After Mental Health Together: How Aspire Supports Clients and Staff

At Aspire Personalised Care, we believe everyone’s mental health matters. Mental health affects all of us, whether that’s our clients or the Aspire Personalised Care team, so it’s something we care about deeply.
Everything we do is based on our values (Listen, Inspire, Kind, Excellence, Integrity, Trusting), and that includes how we look after our clients’ mental health and why we create mental health-related policies for our team.
Read on to discover how we support our clients and staff with their mental health.
What Mental Health Means to Us
Mental health is about how we think, feel and behave. And just like the weather or seasons, it can change; some days are good while other days can be a bit glum.
But no matter how you feel day to day, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone; everyone experiences mental health, including good and bad days.
At Aspire Personalised Care, we know that supporting people with their mental health isn’t just about treatment. It’s also about connection and not feeling like you’re alone. It’s about feeling respected and listened to. And it’s about tailored support that ensures our clients and staff can be independent, even if that’s with a helping hand.
Our values guide everything we do, including our approach to mental health. They spell out LIKE IT and enable us to support people with their mental health in a way that feels personal, caring and consistent.
- Listen – We take the time to really hear what people are saying, so they feel understood.
- Inspire – We encourage small steps forward, helping people believe in themselves and what they can do.
- Kind – We show kindness every day, whether that’s a smile, a gentle word or a helping hand.
- Excellence – We keep learning and improving, so the care we give is always the best it can be.
- Integrity – We do what we say we will, and we’re always honest and reliable.
- Trusting – We build trust by being consistent, so clients and families know they can count on us.
When our team displays these values, we don’t just provide support; we bring comfort, confidence, and dignity to the people we care for.
Spotting the Signs
Spotting the signs of someone struggling with their mental health is very important and can make a big difference. Here are signs we look for:
- Feeling sad, low or losing interest in things
- Getting angry or irritated more than usual
- Pulling away from others or not doing things they used to do
- Changes in sleep, eating or personal care.
However, we don’t only look out for signs of poor mental health; we also support our clients throughout their experiences and daily lives.
At Aspire Personalised Care, our support workers are trained to listen and act with kindness. If we see these changes in our clients, or even within the team, we act; we talk about how you might be feeling, we plan how we can help you, and we support you through every step.
For example, one of our support workers, Julie, works with a client called Lucy. Lucy enjoys taking quiet walks in scenic areas because they improve her mental health and make her feel better. As a result, every time Julie sees Lucy, they go for a walk in the countryside or a park.
How We Support Our Clients
At Aspire Personalised Care, our team provide essential help and care for our clients, which helps to support their mental health.
Here are some examples of how our support workers help our clients:
Building relationships
We build genuine relationships with our clients. By providing clients with a consistent support worker, they can build trust and create strong relationships together.
But we don’t only offer social interaction with our support workers, as our whole team know the importance of connection, which is why we help clients join in with friends, go to events and do the things they enjoy.
Personalised Support Plans
Everyone is different, and their mental health needs are unique to them. This is why we tailor our plans to each client, considering what matters to them and what routines help them.
From helping with meals and medication to going out or just keeping a safe, clean home, our support workers provide support that allows our clients to live independently and with dignity. This helps to boost their mental health while still feeling supported.
Professional Support
At Aspire Personalised Care, we work with health professionals, when needed. We support clients in getting therapy, medical support and accessing relevant mental health services that can benefit them.
By listening with concern and contacting relevant healthcare professionals, we can provide our clients with the best possible care and help them access early support.
We do this without judgment or blame because we understand that kindness is a vital part of mental health and that sometimes we all need a little extra support.
How We Support Our Staff
At Aspire Personalised Care, we know we can only provide the best care for our clients if we care for ourselves, which is why we’re committed to supporting our staff with their mental health.
Many of our team have lived experience with mental health, which is probably why we’re so good at providing the right kind of support our clients need.
Here are some ways we help our team look after their mental health:
Staff Welfare Year
This year, as part of Staff Welfare Year, we’re doing more talking therapies, wellbeing check-ins and support sessions.
By implementing these mental health policies, we’re helping our team manage their professional and personal stress, issues, or problems. Because a problem shared is a problem halved!
WorkWell Scheme
We’ve recently joined the WorkWell scheme, which aims to support disabled people and people with health conditions to start, stay or succeed in work.
This new initiative offers one-to-one support, personal plans and access to local services, including health advice, volunteering opportunities, careers guidance and workplace support.
Volunteering Days
Our team are also encouraged to give back to our local community, through our volunteering days. Giving back isn’t only good for our community, but it also enhances our team’s mental health and makes them feel proud, accomplished and connected.
Real-Life Reflection
At Aspire Personalised Care, we work with our clients and support their mental health and wellbeing. This looks different for all our clients, and depends on their personal circumstances, preferences and needs.
Here are two real-life stories of how we help support our clients’ mental health:
Lucy
Lucy needs support with her mental health and wellbeing. She also loves having peaceful walks in the countryside, so she plans walks for herself and her support worker.
These regular walks in scenic areas help Lucy feel calm, discover meaningful connections and build her confidence.
Jessie
Another client success story is Jessie. When we first started working with Jessie, she had spent three months in the hospital and needed support to be independent in the community.
She was still struggling with her mental health, but by working with our support workers, Jessie started to enjoy her hobbies and interests again.
Now that Jessie has rediscovered her joy for swimming and spending time with and caring for horses, she’s rebuilt her confidence and reclaimed her purpose.
She’s also started volunteering at Riding for the Disabled, where she can both enjoy her time spent caring for animals and meet new friends along the way.
Our client’s stories just go to show that when you tackle mental health problems early on and with care and compassion, the client can feel better, improve their mental wellbeing and live independently again.
