First Steps into Care and Support

I took my first step into a caring role as a domestic assistant. Little did I know how much of an impact this would have on me and my future career.

A young girl appeared at the door of the children’s home. She looked scared cold and fragile. Her social worker introduced her and left shortly afterwards. First impressions so important, and this is where the trusting relationship starts.

Six months on I was working as a support worker with the same girl, preparing for foster care with so much to look forward to. She reminds me of the first day she arrived:

“You gave me tomato soup helped me with my bag and made my bed. You didn’t leave me alone. You were so kind”

The simple things matter so much. First impressions are so important. I wonder if this beautiful girl knows how much she inspired me.
